New Hydropower Plant Set to Transform Zambia's Northern Province

In a major step toward strengthening Zambia's energy security and sustainable development goals, Lufubu Power Company is set to construct a massive 163-megawatt hydropower plant along the Lufubu River, located in Northern Province. The project is expected to inject new life into the country’s power infrastructure and contribute to national electrification efforts, particularly in underserved communities.

The hydroelectric facility will span the districts of Mpulungu, Nsama, and Mporokoso, making it one of the most ambitious energy projects in the region’s history. Valued at 23.7 billion Kwacha (approx. $800 million USD), the plant represents one of the largest private sector investments in Zambia’s energy sector.
A statement issued by ZESCO’s Corporate Affairs Department to ZNBC News confirmed that a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) has already been signed between ZESCO and Lufubu Power Company. This agreement ensures long-term energy offtake, laying the foundation for sustainable, reliable, and affordable electricity generation.

ZESCO Managing Director, Justin Loongo, hailed the project as a milestone in Zambia’s journey toward energy independence. "This investment is a testament to the potential of Zambia's underutilized hydrological assets," said Mr. Loongo. "It supports our vision to diversify the energy mix and provide stable power even in areas prone to climate-related disruptions."
To support integration of this new plant into the national grid, ZESCO will also construct a new 330kV transmission line from Mporokoso to Kasama. This infrastructure will play a key role in enhancing grid stability, connecting remote communities, and distributing power across the broader national framework.

Mr. Kachasa also pointed out that the Lufubu project will reduce Zambia’s over-reliance on the southern hydropower stations, many of which have been affected by periodic droughts in recent years. By leveraging the hydrological advantages of the north, the country can ensure a more balanced and resilient energy system.

Hydropower is among the cleanest forms of energy. With zero emissions during operation, the Lufubu plant is expected to significantly contribute to Zambia’s climate action goals while also creating:
